. >> i've been in business 25 years. i have no idea what you are talking about. >> last week mitt romney dominated in his first debate against president obama. the president even admitted he had a bad night. >> your supporters have been saying you did not show up. >> there's no doubt i can make a better case, which is why i so look forward to tuesday. >> is it possible you gave up your reelection that night. >> no. >> we cannot afford another series of budget deficits of roughly $1 trillion per year. this is not just bad for the economy. it's bad for jobs. >> brandi hitt, abc news, ky. >> during tonight's debate, log on to wjla.com/react from your compatible smartphone tablets or browser and give us your reaction. we will show the results on abc 7 news at 11:00. we are looking at 48 degrees >> . still to come, an update on a man brutally beaten near the eastern market area in the district. captioned by the national captioning institute --www.ncicap.org-- >> thursday morning, welcome back. adam caskey and with a look at your forecast. it may be a lot cooler today than yesterday by about 1

, then perhaps your ears picked up during this year's debate, when mitt romney talked about federal funding and took on pbs in the process. it was one of the memorable moments in the debate, when mitt romney called for an end to government funding of the moderator's own network. >> i am going to stop the subsidy to pbs, i like big bird, i like you too, but i won't keep spending on things to get china to pay for it. >> but while he didn't have an attack that night, president obama talked about it the next day. >> he will do away with regulations on wall street, but he will crack down on sesame street. thank goodness, somebody is finally cracking down on big bird. pbs has been a favorite target of mostly conservative politicians for years. when he was house speaker, gingrich called it a little sand box for the rich, prompting us to ask some parents what they thought about it. >> i think he chose the wrong target. >> the network of sesame street and the civil war and masters, pbs has 179 stations across the country, including some smaller rural stations that couldn't make it without the subsid

that would indicate, yes, he would take us to war yet again in western asia. >> romney talked a lot about military spending today. here is how he's going to spend tax dollars. here it spp. >> we needed to fulfill our missions by building 15 ships ber year including three submarines. i will have missile defense to protect against threats. snrs where will he get the money for this h? is all that necessary? >> that's a good question. we just did a study at center for american progress and institute for policy studies. larry corb, former secretary of defense was on the board with me. and we showed how if you cut national security spending, ed, not just the pentagon, but everything across the board. v.a., doe's nuclear weapons and so forth, you would cut a trillion dollars out in ten years and still bring us back to 2007, ed. 2007 level spending and inflation adjusted dollars. that's because for 13 years now, we have been increasing the defense budget. you can easily cut. to hear this man talk even against what secretary gates was recommending, but even to the point where he would increase the

the republican, ron paul. i will vote for mitt romney because he talks like he has a head on strong. he will get the industrial back to work. how much is obama spending every year on an green global environment? how much money has he spent on the environment? everybody keeps calling me wanting me to go to college and stuff. how can i go to work -- there is no industrial work? >> thank you for the call. you mentioned ron paul -- of course it was congressman paul ryan debating tonight. >> i want to state that you said earlier that somebody on the page stated joe biden was a fool. he was an overly aggressive. i feel like obama should have been more aggressive with romney in the first debate. look, joe biden put it this administrative record on the record. paul ryan that could not back up what he was saying. >> ok. thank you for the call. john has this point. . >> and other men are two with your calls and comments and another chance to see the debate in its entirety. less is on the phone from kentucky. >> is essentially the format really did not serve either by then -- joe biden or paul ryan. i thou

that the campaign always said that mitt romney was not comfortable talking about. these kinds of very personal things but is it effective? >> i thought in the debate it was very effective when he personalized things and talked about families he met and people he met an dong it on the road now, too. i think that's smart. voters throughout the campaign -- polls have shown voters find obama more likable person and in the next two debates romney's going to maintain that and increase the likability. they're voting for someone to hear speak for four years and he has to close the gap to win the election. >> people that support the president saying on style and substance we see a different man going after the new mitt romney and surrogates pointing it out, working it in to the stump speech. take a listen. >> now, my opponent is doing a little tap dance at the debate the other night. trying to wriggle out of stuff he's been saying for a year. doing like a -- it was like "dancing with the stars." more maybe it was "extreme makeover." debate edition. >> robert, is that effective? >> i'm not so sure it's

at 11:20 today. we want to know what you think these candidates should talk about, or what mitt romney should specifically address in his speech and what foreign- policy issues you think he needs to talk about more on the campaign trail. already getting reaction from facebook this morning. host: just below that, eleanor rights -- host: we want to get to your calls this morning, start calling in now. we have -- we will read to you a few more articles from this speech. "mitt romney strives to stand apart in global policy." host: again, that speech is happening at about 11:20 this morning. we will take our first call on this from clinton, illinois. matt is waiting on the independent line. good morning. caller: mitt romney needs to go after the whole libya at incident. he may have made a few missteps regarding coming out with information, but he needs to layoff of that, because it is one thing that he can actually use. i do not know if it will help his foreign policy, because obama can just come back and say -- that is what i did -- but that is something he will really have to focus on if

-elected. >> in fairness, both obama in romney are talking about alternative ways of doing this. eliminating the deductions that an individual can take. >> romney told me $25,000 -- >> and the president has proposed to reduce the rate at which you can item yieds it. >> but romney started out at 17,000 and then to you he start of raised the cap a little bit. >> and chuck shumer threw a ball into this. we have a trillion deficit. why are we reducing tax rates at all. let's use it to our deficit reduction rather than lowering rates at the top. >> you know this as i did. when biden kept talking about raising taxes for people making a million or more as opposed to $250,000. >> that's a chuck schumer idea as well coming from new york. >> but all this should tell us is that before people go to the voting boothss, they're not going to know the answers to these questions. everyone would like to know the answers to these questions, but you have professional groups disagreeing about the economic impact of these things. so we don't really know. >> we have more clarity on the spending side where romney has said he want

in these debates. the thing they're not talking about are mitt romney's taxes. the idea that they can look back and talk about taxes and ryan still getting caught with these lies and then the next day saying that's exactly what we meant to say. how does this work, errol. >> a promise has been made. a big broad promise has been made to splash taxes. it's estimated by a reasonable objective source that this could cost treasury 5 trillion-dollar over ten years. a lot of people are naturally curious. where are you going to get that 5 trillion-dollar, and it's not in this ticket's political best interest to answer this question. let's say they can do this. the mortgage deduction is going to have to go. there are a number of important tax loopholes, if you want to call them that, or tax incentives that will have to be ended. this is not something they're prepared to talk about. politically you have to understand that. they have 27 days left. it's not in anybody's best interest to say we're going to hawk at the most important entitlement that they've had for generations. they're trying to do somethin

the obama campaign is saying and what the romney campaign is not. >> a favorite talking point of the obama campaign is mitt romney's economic proposals would simply reinstate the tax cut and deregulation policy that led to the 2008 financial meltdown. two things should be said about this claim. one is it's gone unanswered by the romney camp and the second is it's utterly invalid. the tax cut put in place under president bush in 2001 and 2003 cannot be blamed for the mortgage market collapse that triggered the great recession. in fact, they can be credited with helping the economy out of the recession of 2001, 2002, and with helping overcome the economic damage from hurricane katrina. by the way, that expansion, and the tax revenue it produced were sufficient to drive down the federal budget deficit for 2005 through 2007. this despite massive war spending. as for deregulation, president obama himself said former president bush put more regulations in place than he has at the same time frame. it is true that there is one bit of deregulation regularly blamed by the liberal economists for help

comfortably put away. >> bret: look at virginia. we have talked about that state a lot. romney is there delivering the foreign policy speech today. it's in the tossup category. still on this map. is it sliding one way or another? >> there has been clearly been moving to romney in all the states. you are seeing that. the debate did make a difference for him. virginia is going down to wire. i don't think karl and i expect anything different. >> when you talk about polls and independents self-identify as republicans, >> the same thing with democrats is happening for romney. grows two or three points and then all of a sudden the number of people identify as republicans go up in the polls as well. i don't think that the pollsters are rejirging the numbers. something that is happening as a shift now, more people are starting to identify the republicans. >> remember one thing about the debate. the first debate is determinative. that is to say that the result after the third debate tends to mirror what happened in the first debate. if you win the first debate, you generally tend to win

take in. >> governor romney talked about the issue in his debate with president obama. conservatives and liberals are calling for a move to moral economy. for republicans cutting spend democrats it is asking the rich to pay more. governor mike huckabee joins us live . great to have you here. thank you for joining us. >> thank you, uma. >> i know it is an important issue. why do you feel morality and the economy are linked . >> some people call it generational theft and that is accurate description and if you steal from somebody that is a moral issue. that's what we are doing. we are stealing from the generation that is coming after us. we are spending money they will have to pay back on our behalf . we get the benefit and they get the burden. that is immoral and wrong to do that and that is what the huge 16 trillion debt represents. >> are you concerned about the current state of affairs is accepted by some as the new norpal? >> i am uma . let me be fair. this is not just something democrats created but republicans have done. republicans boast they don't raise taxes. that may be wond

failed -- >> tara that was an excellent shift but answer for me about governor romney. we can talk about the president. >> that is my answer. >> no, that is my answer, soledad. >> the answer is that the president -- -- the answer about president obama? >> i think the governor has made his position clear relative to where we stand with israel. >> he hasn't is my point. >> decided to meet with entertainment folks and people like that, rather than benjamin netanyahu and i think that there -- again, there's a clear position here -- >> it's not. it's not. that's my point. my point, tara, hold on. just hold on. my point is, it's completely contradictory. my question is, which is it? >> in your viewpoint. >> okay. then tell me how it's not completely contradictory in your viewpoint, but don't talk about president obama at this moment, answer the question about governor romney. >> we will stand side by side with -- we will stand side by side with israel and -- and -- and the governor has made that clear. i'm not going to get into a big foreign policy debate with you here. that's not -- that's no

, the senior communications adviser for the romney campaign. nice to see you. thanks for talking with us. >> hi, soledad. good morning. absolutely. >> so we know having read some of these excerpts that have been sent out by the campaign that governor romney's going to focus on israel, he's going to focus on the palestinian territories and no big surprise, he's going to focus on iran. why don't you spell out for me exactly what governor romney's position is when it comes to iran? >> well, listen, governor romney is going to clearly spell out the choice that there is this election, particularly when it comes to foreign policy and all of the unrest that is happening in the middle east right now and how we have to address that and that is working with our allies, that is calling terrorism terrorism when we see it, that is acting boldly and strongly with leadership and that's what americans want to see and hear. i think we'll have an opportunity to see that in the speech. i don't want to give out the whole speech. i think that americans will have the opportunity to hear that and see that. but i thin

to a clip from tonight's debate. >> gov. romney talk about the weakness and apologies from the obama administration. was that appropriate right in the middle of a crisis? >> on the same day the obama administration had the same position. they descend out there on statement to put up earlier in the day in cairo. it is never too early to speak out for our valleys. we should have spoken out right away when the green revolution was up and started when the mullahs in iran were attacking their own people. we should always stand up for peace, for democracy, for individual rights. we should not imposing these devastating defense cuts. what that does well way equivocate on our values, we sure we are cutting our own defense, it projects weakness. will we look we, our adversaries are more willing to test us. >> with all due respect, that is a bunch of malarkey. not a single thing said is accurate. i will be very specific. number one, this lecture on embassy security, the congressmen here cut embassy security in his budget by $300 million below what we asked for. so much for the embassy security

, that's the proposal that mitt romney laid out. we can talk about the math specifically. i brought you the differe pieces of his tax plan that he listed. >> i like your version, all scribbled in a sharpie there, huh? >> we don't have the sharp graphics here at the campaign that you guys showed at cnn. but the fact is, in a debate in february, on your network, mitt romney said that all americans are going to get a 20% across the board tax cut, including the top 1%. it was like going on an episode of "oprah's favorite things," except instead of getting a car if you were one of the wealthiest americans, you were going to get that 20% across the board tax cut. even on the program a little bit ago, he wouldn't specify how he's going to pay for it. he won't specify those deductions. so we can't put him on this chart until he specifies how he's going to pay for that plan. >> all right. but to be fair, he has made it clear that his tax policy is for a 20% cut and elimination of deductions and loopholes. you're right, he hasn't said which ones, but it is very clear that his tax proposal include

watching the debate last week with a group of undecided voters in colorado oh. when romney talked about not raising taxes on the middle class, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive. they had these stylus things, and they shot it off the chart. it earned him one of the highest marks of the night from that focus group. so this fight of the middle class comes at a time when the president is on the defensive and lost some ground in key areas. cnn orc poll tonight shows the president's lead is half a point outside the margin of error. last month he was leading with nine points. we told you last night about a pughel poll which shows romney leading obama. you can see also barely outside the margin of error. in that same poll, the president's 18-point lead among women disappeared. he's now running even with romney. so who is winning this vital war over middle class tax cuts? rah ham salon joins us and john avlon, senior political columnist at "newsweek" and "the daily beast." this debate over $5 trillion and what you're trying to do and on the backs of the middle class, this isn't just about

's the real reality of what's happening out there. >> you hear mitt romney pivoting talking about the real unemployment rate at 11%, so i -- i guess that's his pivot coming off the unemployment rate yesterday. randi, why does all this matter? as you mentioned off the top, the economy by far the number one issue with americans. take a look at this, from our cnn/orc international poll. we did it about a week ago before the first debate but i don't think it will change people's perceptions. by far the economy remains the top issue on the minds of americans. it's been that way since late 2007 when the u.s. economy went into a recession, and how do americans feel about which candidate is doing a better job on the economy right now? they were split going into the first debate. we'll take a look at polling coming out that was conducted after the first debate. again, right there, can you see that number. that 48%, that really says it all. the economy is the most important issue on the minds of american voters, and what's the most important economic issue, jobs, randi? >> which is why there is so m

into a woman, who said you know i really like romney when he talks about business because i am a small businesswoman but i really like obama when he talks about women's issues and i wonder if her -- she is sitti at home watching this debate tonight in lakewood, colorado changed her mind or whether it formed her thinking or help her make it up, i don't think it did. >> rose: chuck? >> well i would just say, in baseball terms, because it might be possible the yankees orioles game may be out of the corner of my eye in the middle of a series. >> and exactly, but think of think way, so game one, romney won, game two, had, had ryan won this debate decisively and there is no way to look at it the polls are split on this, some polls give it to biden, on substance abide den controlled this debate, a debate coach may say. >> it was important to the biden campaign hot to lose this debate, a draw, even split, whatever you want, however you want to look at it, it was about getting to the next presidential debate while not keeping -- while sort of lifting up the base a little bit and i think on that

closeup when romney didn't talk about women at all and when they obsessed over it in the convention to me that was a sign that women like all other voters are really judging on the most important and central issue in this campaign, and that is the economy, when romney was more credible on that and gained with everyone including women. >> rose: chuck todd, will fact checkers tomorrow morning look at this and examine this and find out and suggest that somebody was either misleading or, quote, lying? >> i don't think there are any lies in there, my favorite part is when, you know, there is that one point where you have joe biden saying 97 percent of small businesses make $250,000 or less and paul ryan insisting 1 million businesses are affected by that and that is they are both ride but, right but want to use different numbers one wants to use raw data and the other percentage to make it look large and make themselves look right i want to point out on abortion, i thought what was amazing with that question about the catholic faith and martha raddatz put it is if it is possible for both of th

they needed to do something. the first thing you're talking about with mitt romney and foreign policy had been this trip to europe, europe, poland, israel, the olympics hadn't gone so well. now they have something to talk about. how did it go? i think the main difference and what they strive to do is paint a contrast between them and the obama administration. the contrast becomes part of their posturing. how are we going to approach foreign policy differently? the posture is that obama's foreign policy is lead from behind, i think mitt romney is really lean forward. we're trying to use our influence in the middle east to -- but really we're trying to use our influence in the region to get the outcomes we want in order to shape the policies that we want, in order to receive the outcomes that we want in the middle east. >> let's be honest, posturing is what we've got here. was his speech heavy on detail or light on detail? >> i'm stealing this from someone on twitter who said the difference between romney and obama on foreign policy is romney says speak louder but carry the same stick. sort of t

for the white house as romney did last week. it should be interesting with those two. >> expect them to talk budget numbers and the wonkiness that everybody is talking about. >> we'll see. >>> well, gas prices across the country are still soaring, hitting a national ample of $3.81 a gallon. drivers in california are feeling the pinch like never before. prices across the state soared to a record $4.65 a gallon. you see some even higher than that. a lot of it being blamed on a series of problems, including a refinery power outage. governor jerry brown took emergency steps to increase the supply, but it could take several more days for prices to level off. >>> in venezuela it's another victory for hugo chavez, handily winning and it will leave him in power for six more years. he left his supporters to vote in the street. voting turnout was the highest in decades. some waited for hours but the election was peaceful. >> some people thought he was vulnerable, but he pulls it off. >> apparently not. >>> police in colorado say a backpack found in the town of superior is likely linked to a 10-year-ol

was a week ago. the economy getting better has caused romney to switch a little bit, talking not just about the economy but also about leadership and also trying to make himself a more acceptable alternative both personally and ideologically. >> steve, you look at these numbers, you've got to be thinking one thing if you're running a campaign, turnout, turnout, turnout. turnout will make a difference. >> turnout's going to make the difference, but one of the things that's going to help drive turnout is that momentum. and clearly 26 days out mitt romney's got momentum in this race. he was staring into the abyss a week ago. you look at all of the polls, and you look at the real clear politics average from last night where they average all these polls together, mitt romney ahead at that national average for the first time, getting very, very tight in these swing states. you know, i think that romney, you know, that tonight, you know, joe biden's got to do what dick cheney did eight years ago. he's got to stop the momentum. >> stop the bleeding. >> that the democrats had coming out of that bad

talked about his five boys, that was racist because it was romney suddenly calling obama boy. >> sean: how desperate are they? they seem they're freaking out, panic and desperate? >> they are. let's understand something, as every day comes in, the polls get worse, we go from dishonest -- we started with untruthful, now dishonest, and now lying. god knows what it will be by the end of this week. the point is -- let me just say this. this is the biggest debate victory probably since 1980. >> sean: it is. >> in terms of a single debate, in terms of the margin but more importantly what it did for romney was, the number of people it gave them a chance to see. the problem with the lying strategy, the people that watch "60 minutes," within five days they would have put up ads promoting their debate victory. the fact is it was big. it helped romney a lot. we went from 30%, almost doubling the 53% among uncommitted voters that he cared about people, his favorability -- i've been waiting for more polls. we finally got pew. some of the polls are slow on this. the thing i find is the election is

the ryan plan, you will notice, laura. is he talking about the romney plan. is he talking about the romney tax plan. the romney budget. and making it very clear for the first time and i thought he did a great job of it, talking about who is the boss and the boss is governor romney. >> laura: all right, lou, great to see you. have a great weekend. >> you too. >> laura: when we come right back, martha raddatz questions the can cats on abortion. -- raddatz on abortion. we will hear from both sides coming up. >> laura: thanks for staying with us, i'm laura ingraham in for bill o'reilly. in the unresolved problem segment tonight, just when we thought the so-called war on women debate was over, last night's moderator martha raddatz might have reignited an issue with a question about abortion and faith. >> i don't see how a person can separate their public life from their private life or from their faith. our faith informs us in everything we do. my nate informs me about how to take care of the vulnerable about how to make sure that people have a chance in life. now, you weren't asked why i'm pro

as an indication of weakness abroad while biden said romney's campaign talks first before they know what the facts are. reporting live in danville, i'm randall pinkston. >>> that cbs news poll found the overall impressions of both vice presidential candidate improved after the debate. 55% think biden is somebody they can relate to. 48% think ryan is. both candidates on how uncommitted voters feel about them as being effective president. we break down last night's face off. >> reporter: joe biden came out very aggressive in this debate and maintained that tone throughout. to republicans he was rude. they were using the word unhinged, complaining about his smirking. for democrats it's exactly what they wanted to see. a week ago president obama was very passive in his debate against mitt romney. it was frustrating for democrats. they wanted to see him take to it mitt romney. he didn't do that. joe biden took it to paul ryan. he interrupted. he dominated the debate. as for ryan he was fine. he was on message. he certainly didn't alienate anyone. this night was about joe biden and about changing the na

'll welcome joe here to talk about mitt romney's big foreign policy speech yesterday. dave zirin, will be along as well. and chris guidener will be in studio as well as well as judd from think progress. but first. >> on this tuesday, professional sky diver felix bum gardner is set to attempt to break his record he will free fall from 120 thousand feet, and break the sound barrier, if all goes well he'll land safely in the new mexico dessert about ten minutes after he jumps. waiting for him will be joel, who holds the record. >> bill: there's one -- i just want to -- you said if all goes well -- >> if all goes well we'll land in the desert -- >> bill: if all doesn't go well what happens? dan? >> well, different outcome. morning. she is filling in. the show is also in talks to get michelle obama on the air. ann romney is in the battleground states of virginia. she greeted cancer survivors and campaign volunteers yesterday in chester. peter in sarasota, florida, on our independent line. we are talking about whether political spouses affect your vote. caller: absolutely not. and i am an independent for u.s. senate in florida. and i'me-in candidate, single with a mensa iq, and i'm the owner of two companies. geraldine ferraro was the best candidate running back years ago. vote for pete. host: let's go to our next call in hindsville, alabama, on our democrat line. good morning. no, they don't affect my vote. they are very intelligent women, but i've already made up my mind. so the spouses don't have anything to do with that. host: do they give more perspective and to who the candidates are? radio station in washington, wtop, says -- do you feel the spouses can give more of a human side to the person? caller: they might try, but most people see what the. candidates the. it's kind of hard for them to cha

, john? >> reporter: good morning. governor romney will be talking agriculture today. not surprisingly we're on a 700 acre farm owned by the cook family. a lot of soybeans and corn here. we're in madison county. governor romney won this in the caucuses by the way. he will argue the president's policies things like estate taxes, climate change, environmental regulations, energy policy are hurting farmers. he continues to go after the president on issue of jobs of the even though the unemployment number is down below the psych lodge call level at 8% on the stump in newport news, governor romney found a new way to use it. >> if you look back 60 years, at all the months we had unemployment before 8% before president obama. there were 39 months. in all 60 years with unemployment above 8%. under this president there have been 43 months. under one president alone. he does not understand what it takes to create a real recovery. i do. >> reporter: bill you mentioned the pew poll. the pew poll governor romney was seen as guy with new ideas. he was the one people trust to create jobs. bill: one of t

>> rose: welcome to the program. we begin this evening talking about mitt romney's foreign policy speech at b.m.i. earlier today. joining me, tom friedman. >> and i don't think this is the time when americans are looking after two exhausting and incredibly costly wars in the middle east to be making big foreign policy initiatives. now, that said, we do have v the arab spring and things happen on your watch, you've got to respond to them. and for my money what i would like to do is see us really start to rethink our whole way of relating to that part of the world and i would -- if i had my druthers-- i say this half seriously, half tongue in cheek-- i'd like to see arne duncan, secretary of education, be put in charge of middle east policy. because i tnk what really neeto be moving toward this there is a kind of race formula. >> rose: we continue looking at foreign policy issues in the campaign with david sanger of "new york times" and richard haass in the council on foreign relations. >> he basically laid out a conditional foreign policy. saying "look, the era where we give aid t

. >> and talking about women voters who romney needs and has made up ground with in recent days this i think is much more devastating in terms of showcasing just how back and forth and around the world he's been. >> absolutely. i think the romney campaign is counting on people only looking at the most recent sound bite being shown to them, primarily on local news where most people get their news and they're counting on people not going back and checking and they're counting on a rigorous media fact check on it that he can get away with marketing this version of himself to current voters. mitt romney as republicans on the right believe, is just going to be the hand that holds the pen that signs conservative legislation. so there's no reason to believe that as president, he wouldn't simply sign because look, if he wins, that meant that republicans probably get the senate and probably hold the house. there is any reason to believe mitt romney would not follow through and sign anti-abortion legislation that came to his desk? is there any reason to believe he wouldn't at least attempt to put forw

been capital -- bain capital and the beginning. it talked about how mitt romney had made his money. it was not that anybody has anything against mitt romney for being rich. we'll make our choices and how we make money. this is one of the ads, perhaps the most powerful and we have done. other consultants have talked about this, saying it is very powerful. check this out and then we will talk about it. >> not knowing what it was for. just days later, all three shifts were told to assemble in the warehouse. a group of people walk on to that stage and told us that the plant is now closed and all of you are fired. i looked both ways could i looked at the crowd and we all just lost their jobs. we don't have an income. nit romney made over $100 million by shutting down power plant and devastated our lives. -- shutting down power plant in devastated our lives. -- shutting down our plant and its devastated our lives. out of the blue one day, we were told to build a 30-foot stage -- >> ab powerful ad called "stage ," powerful because it sets the stage for what mitt romney's parties were. fro

. romney is talking about is it takes too long to save money. this crisis is right around the corner with medicare. it's going to run out of money within the next ten years or so unless we make some changes. yes, kevin, i like what you're talking about. i agree entirely. the competition model makes sense. but i'm not so sure we have enough time. if you look at medicare, social security and medicaid, by the end of the decade, they're going to take all of our income tax revenues. we're not going to have money left over for anything else we spend money on. >> unless you raise taxes. >> unless you raise taxes. >> unless you raise taxes. >> we need to have more economic growth, i think. there's no question about it. >> so much of what you're saying about what a romney administration will look like is pred kalted on economic growth. what's the estimate you have, in you enact the things that romney wants to enact very quickly, adds 1% a year to gdp growth? >> yes, that's right. that's right. and i think you know, you cover this a lot, firms are sitting on cash. there's all this uncertainty

's talk about taxes next. i'm going to let governor romney explain this for himself. >> well, i've made it pretty clear that my principles are number one, simplify the code, number two, create incentives for small businesses and large businesses to grow. number three, don't reduce the burden on high-income taxpayers. and number four, remove the burden somewhat from middle income people. >> now, you can get all that done in four years we'll have a bran new tax code by 2016. again, it's bold. everybody talks about doing it but nobody's done it really since reagan. finally let's take a look at the deficit. romney is planning to cut a lot more than funding to big bird and pbs. his plans include repealing obama care, reducing foreign aide and privatizing amtrak. you may notny that's that big of a deal. i use it all the time. romney says privatizing it will save $1.3 billion. the budget is made up a lot of small things. however he does it, his goal is to reduce government spending to 20% of gdp. gdp is the biggest measure of everything we produce in society. he wants to do that by the end 6 h

and steady commander-in-chief. mitt romney shows he would be the exact opposite. behind the tough talk he is erratic and unsteady and irresponsible on his audition in the world stage. would you agree with that. >> of course not. they can say over and over again. especially when romney talks about not setting a time limit. >> brian: let me bring you to afghanistan real quick before we run out of time. a reporter came out in a speech in washington and said the administration has been lying and there is a narrative coming out of the washington that is nonsense. she got out of afghanistan like you d and she said the taliban is gaining strength and we are not told the truth. that is a farrah phrase for word and that is her position. is it yours. >> the taliban is gaining strength and there is a narrative from administration. i want the narrative to be progress in afghanistan especially with all . sacrifice and surge and the guys who fought. but the political solution hasn't moved. karzai's government is corrupt and the taliban is gaining strength. it is not a pretty picture what of the world i

the tab. for you. recipe for job growth. we have tried both approaches. romney is talking about is the in 2001 and 2003. we ended up with the slowest job growth and 50 years. it culminated in the worst depression. i am talking about. businesses did well. in some ways we have some data on which approach is more likely for americans. i believe that the economy works best when middle-class families are getting tax breaks and those live in that we can afford to do blowing up the deficit. >> he gets the first word of that segment. let me make this comment. let me repeat what i said. my plan is not to put in place any tax cut that will add to the deficit. that is not my plan. let's look at history. my plan is not like anything that has been tried before. my plan is to bring down rates and credit so the revenue stays in but we bring down rates to get more people working. my priority is putting peoplethey are suffering. look at the evidence of the last four years. it is extraordinary. we have 23 million people out ofwhen the president took office, 47 million were on food stamps. economi

mitt romney who talked about 38.5 minutes. that wasn't necessarily an advantage for the president. because romney was widely considered to have won that debate. there was less of a gaffe during the vice presidential debate four years ago. joe biden spoke just under 40 minutes. sarah palin spoke for 40 minutes and 29 seconds. biden and palin stood at podiums. tonight, biden and ryan will be sitting together at a table and that will affect the way they interact, possibly also the amount of time they talk. jessica yellin is at the media center. jim acosta is in the spin room. jessica, set the scene for us. what's going on? >> hi, wolf. i'm actually in the media filing center. this is where the press from around the nation, actually from around the world. there are some people in from koer countries, have come to watch the debate and file their stories. you can see around here, here's our sister company, mark halperin and people from press from all over the place. fili and this is the gymnasium for centre college. usually, they play basketball and sports in here. but tonight, we're wa

't let barack obama talk as much as mitt romney. well, yes, he did. actually, yes, obama talked more. he just had less to say. >> just like the republicans had a rolling set of excuses for the jobs numbers, so it goes both ways. >> those are conspiracies. >> there's a difference between excuses and full-blown conspiracies. by the way, i can't wait for the readjustment of those jobs numbers. by the way, we may have been off a little bit. >> stop it. oh, stop it. i've been studying that. >> i'll bet number. >> 7.8 is just fine, thank you. the president's debate performance remained a hot topic on the sunday talk shows. former presidential candidate newt gingrich and senior obama adviser david axelrod were asked if obama should have called out romney if he thought his opponent was being dishonest. >> the president of the united states had 90 minutes. now, if he had done his homework, if he had actually prepared, if he had actually studied romney, why didn't he say it? why didn't he take romney head on? first of all, the charge on the tax cuts is just plain wrong and i think virtually every

want to talk to you about right in the middle of the crisis, governor romney and you are talking about this again tonight, talked about the weakness, talked about apology from the obama administration. was that really appropriate, right in the middle of the crisis? >> on that same day, the obama administration had the exact same position. let's recall that they disavowed their own statement that they put up earlier in the day in cairo. we had the same position. it's never too early to speak out for our values. we should have spoken out right away when the green revolution was up and starting when the mullahs in iran were attacking their people. we should not have called bashar assad a reformer when he was turning his russian-provided guns on his own people. we should always stand up for peace, for democracy, for individual rights. and we should not be imposing these devastating defense cuts because what that does, when we equivocate on our values, when we show -- >> am i going to get anything to say here? >> it projects weakness, when we look weak, our adversaries are able to attack us

talked about this a lot. look at this. romney, ahead now in florida, north carolina, ohio and virginia. >> not ohio. >> ohio is down by one. >> he was so far behind. >> what we are seeing, in florida, which is a republican-leaning state if the race is tied, governor romney has a slight advantage. north carolina, he should win, as well. ohio is the key. all the swing states, including virginia, can go to governor romney but unless he wins ohio, he cannot win the election. ohio is now close to deadlocked. >>gregg: governor romney was down double digit. >> he was down in ohio, certainly. i don't know about double digits. notice news organization which spent all the money doing the state polls, we have not had one poll since the debate talking about the effect, favorability and other things. i will say this: one of the things that has happened, the race has the disconnect -- romney should you'd this, the $200 million or more spent making him into an eager and the president never made the charges. i would be out there torpedoing obama's add very advertising, why won't he say it himself? >>

? >> reporter: well, talk about a lymentum stopper there, jim. i mean, what it has done it really rob romney of one of his sost reliable lines in his hempaign speeches. i've heard him say over and eser, under president obama, has neyment has never been below 8%. obviously, he's not saying that now. instead what we saw yesterday and what he's going to say here in this rally tonight is it d bed be better and it would be better if he were president, reminding people of just how much americans in this country are struggling and saying those numbers just don't reflect how bad this economy really is. >> axelrod: what else do you expect, jan, in the run-up to the second debate? foreporter: well, what we've already seen is more focus, more aggressiveness coming from governor romney after that debate, but, jim, there is one other thing that is so striking. i've never seen it in the 10 months i've covered this campaign as what we saw last night in st. petersburg, mitt mneyey, very private man, does not like to talk about himself-- eaich is kind of unusual for a nclitician-- told several personal stori

for romney. everybody's talking about how badly obama did in the debate. i'm talking about how great romney did. i think he explained his positions. he explained why taxing the rich won't work, because it's taxing the small businesses that create jobs. he's talked about the medicare issue. i think that this was a big win for romney. i think ryan will hammer it home. >> sean: they're going to sequester for six days biden? he can't come out in public? they're going to try to force his brain full of information? i just don't see that working. >> well, sean, maybe they take him off the trail for six days so he doesn't mess it up. >> sean: well, maybe mess it up -- >> there was no debate, they should still sequester him for six days. >> sean: probably for the rest of the campaign. you know, i want to go to your book for one second, because we don't have a lot of time tonight, but it's out in bookstores now. this has been something that a lot of conservatives have been concerned about. that is the growing influence and reliance on the united nations, worldwide taxes, which hillary mentioned just,

mitt romney is and was last night. i mean, if he was talking, he was speaking last night, he was lying. and look, mitt romney had a good night, but you know, even a, you know, blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then. >> are these dirty attacks, calling mitt romney a liar. is it a good idea for the democrats. we're back with our panel. brian some suggest this is classless to come and attack mitt romney for lying when the president didn't seen prepared and shell shocked and that's the response. he was so shell shocked that mitt romney was lying that he didn't know how to respond. >> and mitt romney's facts were tricky, we don't have time for that. let's include john sununu, romney's surrogate who said that obama is lazy, incompetent. has no idea what's going on. on both sides comments being made and let's not make this one-sided when you're talking about it. >> clayton: is that fair, tammy? >> americans and i think the tea party is a good example of this want to be told the truth. we have impressions of these guys and americans are going to make up their own mind and we know that p

people will be talking about biden, and then a couple of more with romney and obama. >> bill: yeah, i was surprised and impressed, i guess that obama proved -- so he didn't have a good night, we all know that, but i thought he bounced back pretty quickly the next day. he has been having a lot of fun with the big bird line. and it showed a lot of resilience, i thought, and as you point out the job numbers came on friday which gave him another little boost, cutting the impact of any romney bounce. >> yeah he has an incredible amount of fire and energy when it is his back up against the wall. >> bill: yeah. >> it's almost like he puts himself in positions like that so that he can get excited about politics again. he obviously didn't want to be on that stage, wednesday night. you could just tell he was like, god, 90 minutes. i'm just going to stand here for 90 minutes and let this guy say stuff, and then he sees that the entire nation is mocking him, and then he gets fired up. his aids were talking about the way you could see he was gripping the podium. it is a tell
